Beauty Heroes Luxury Green Beauty Subscription Unboxing & Review: April 2016

Crunchy Parent Beauty Heroes Luxury Green Beauty Subscription Unboxing & Review April 2016

About Beauty Heroes

Beauty Heroes is a luxe green beauty subscription service. The Beauty Heroes mission is to provide their customers with products from the very best non-toxic, clean, green beauty brands.

Each month Beauty Heroes sends one full size luxury product from a premier green beauty brand. They often also include a smaller bonus item from the featured brand as well (because every superhero loves a good sidekick). Products are chosen to fit with the season, and are screened to avoid an impressive laundry list of villain ingredients such as parabens, mineral oil, and triclosan; and to include natural superpower ingredients to nurture your skin such as turmeric, reishi mushroom, and sea buckthorn. Beauty Heroes features the best in luxe green beauty skincare, hair, and body care items; occasionally highlighting non-toxic cosmetic items as well.

Beauty Heroes boxes cost $39.00/month (shipping included) and are less with multi-month subscriptions. In addition, all Beauty Heroes members receive 15% off of any purchase from the Beauty Heroes online clean beauty shop. This month’s box is available for purchase through April 20th and while supplies last.

I purchased this box and was not compensated in any way for this review, although review may contain affiliate links. This simply means that if you join Beauty Heroes through my links, I may receive a small compensation, which allows be to put more dollars back into the blog. All opinions are my own. The box came with a big, bright “Beauty Heroes” label. I was not the only one in the house drawn to the Beauty Heroes box. The kids were home for spring break when I did the unboxing. Asher popped into the room for a quick photobomb, and watched the unboxing from the wings.

When I opened the box, I found pale silver tissue enveloping this month’s products as well as a sparkly turquoise Beauty Heroes mask. Beauty Heroes also sent a detailed enclosure reviewing the brand and products highlighted (more on that in a moment), as well a handy pocket guide listing both villain and superpower ingredients to notice in cosmetic, skincare, and beauty products.

This month’s expert selection comes from the brand True Nature Botanicals. I had seen True Nature Botanicals and their products at A Night for Green Beauty last summer, and had tried their Lip Treatment in the past, but I still did not know much about the story behind the brand.

True Nature Botanicals was founded by Hillary Peterson, a thyroid cancer and melanoma survivor. Hillary was driven to create a line of skin, hair, and body care products that would be effective, use the highest quality ingredients, and completely avoid toxins. True Nature Botanicals uses independent clinical studies to assess the efficacy of many of their most popular products. With an eye on the purpose and power of high quality botanical ingredients, True Nature Botanicals spends upwards of five times more on their product ingredients than leading luxury skincare and perfume brands. As a cancer survivor with an intense respect for plants and their ability to nourish and support, I was excited to sample more products from this brand.

Crunchy Parent Beauty Heroes True Nature Botanicals Exfoliating Moisture Mask April 2016

The superhero item featured this month is a full size jar of the Pacific Exfoliating Moisture Mask (1.7 oz., value $90.00). I adore face masks so I was especially excited to see this selection. The Pacific Exfoliating Moisture Mask is all about brightening and hydrating the skin. The mask had a lightweight consistency and was almost gel-like on the skin. Meant to be applied as a thin layer and left on for a few minutes or more, this mask offers a quick way to give your skin a real pick-me-up. The formulation is packed with powerful natural ingredients and absolutely no fillers. It uses lactic acid to actively exfoliate and moisturize, as well as a host of natural butters and oils to bathe the skin in vitamins, nutrients, and hydration.

Beauty Heroes April 2016 True Nature Botanicals Exfoliating Moisture Mask Closeup

I’ve used the mask twice in the week since receiving the box and I love the results. It is an active mask; you can really feel the lactic acid working hard to exfoliate the skin. Individuals with sensitive skin may wish to do a small patch test before trying the mask, and may err on the side of caution by leaving the mask on for a shorter period of time. The mask can be used for just a few minutes or as long as fifteen minutes. I tried both longer and shorter durations and my skin was fine with either one. I really loved that the mask provides the option of a facial treatment that can be done even in just a few minutes when you are short on time, but in need of some skin pampering.

The mask itself has a pleasant fragrance. I found the sweet floral smell of the neroli oil to be the most pronounced scent. Of course, what I loved the very most about the mask was the way that my skin felt after its use. The mask left my skin feeling buttery soft and smelling faintly of orange blossoms. It was such a luxurious feeling and I had to stop myself from petting my face (which did not stop me from prompting my other family members to touch it to experience how soft it felt). In the true spirit of the Beauty Heroes pairing, this superhero product was made even better with the help of the sidekick product included this month.

The sidekick item this month was a trial size bottle of the True Nature Botanicals Pacific Face Oil (size not listed, stated value $28.00). The face oil blends together an impressive list of natural ingredients from land and sea. It features familiar skincare botanicals such as argan, hemp, avocado and grapeseed oils, as well as more esoteric ingredients such as watermelon seed, kiwi seed, red pine needle, and passionfruit oils.

The face oil is exceptionally lightweight and easily absorbed by the skin. My face just wanted to drink in this oil, especially following the use of the Exfoliating Moisture Mask. The oil has a gorgeous lightly floral scent that barely lingers on the skin. True Nature Botanicals’ clinical trial results have shown the face oil to be superior to Creme de La Mer across every aspect measured, from reduction of fine lines, wrinkles, and pore size to increases in hydration, smoothness, and elasticity. I’m looking forward to seeing how the oil benefits my skin over time. In the meantime, I will appreciate the incredible scent and feel of the product, and how soft it leaves my skin.

April Beauty Heroes Box: Overall Impressions

I think that Beauty Heroes hit it out of the park once again this month. I absolutely adore both of the items that were included in this month’s box and know that I will use every drop of them. I continue to be impressed with Beauty Heroes’s ability to bring some of the absolute best luxury green beauty brands to their subscribers each month, and to deliver such incredible value.

This month’s box featuring two products from True Nature Botanicals had a total value of $118.00 for the $39.00 box price. That represents a savings of over 65% off of the product retail price. I continue to be thrilled by Beauty Heroes’s ability to deliver such high quality products at an absolutely amazing value. Jeannie Jarnot, the founder of Beauty Heroes, has an obvious talent for finding and collaborating with outstanding green beauty brands. As mentioned in the video, she is also an advisor to the Indie Beauty Expo, which is coming to both coasts in the months ahead. If you are a green beauty fan and you want to meet many of these amazing brands, you can learn more about the event here.

Once again, if you are interested in this month’s box it is still available for purchase through April 20th as long as supplies last. Subscription purchases made after April 20th will begin with the May box.

Beauty Heroes Luxury Green Beauty Subscription Unboxing and Review: March, 2016 featuring SkinOwl

As always, I was thrilled to see the box with the big, bright “Beauty Heroes” label on my doorstep. I opened it to find an enclosure reviewing the brand and products highlighted, as well a handy pocket guide listing both villain and superpower ingredients to notice in cosmetic, skincare, and beauty products.

Beauty Heroes March 2016 Skin Owl Beauty Drops PM

Superhero Product:
This month’s expert selection comes from the brand SkinOwl. SkinOwl was a new brand discovery to me, and a reminder of one of the many reasons why I love receiving Beauty Heroes. I know that when introduced to a new brand through them, Beauty Heroes has already done all of the legwork to ensure that the brand and their products meet exceptionally high standards for using high quality, nourishing ingredients that will not be harmful to my body or my planet.

Beauty Heroes did a fantastic Q&A session with Annie Tevelin, the founder of SkinOwl. Annie began her career as a makeup artist. Frustrated by the lack of results achieved with conventional skincare products, Annie sought out help with her eczema and severe acne education and certification in Cosmetic Chemistry. Through this experience she gained appreciation for the importance of the ingredients in skincare products rather than the marketing spin. Annie appreciates simplicity in her formulations; highlighting one or two star ingredients with a supportive cast as needed. She appreciates a less is more philosophy what it comes to her products. In keeping with a respect for ingredients, SkinOwl is mindful to use only ethically and sustainably harvested ingredients; organic and cold pressed oils; and essential oils of the highest quality.

Having learned more about SkinOwl, I was excited to see the products that Beauty Heroes had selected for its subscribers this month.

This superhero product selection for March is a full-size glass bottle of SkinOwl’s Mangosteen Beauty Drops PM (2 oz., $85.00). The deliciously simple blend of boabab and mangosteen oils works to support skin health by healing free radical damage. The naturally anti-bacterial and anti-viral oils also soothe skin and reduce inflammation, working to improve blemished or chronically dry skin. The oil feels exceptionally lightweight on the skin and absorbed very quickly after use. I loved the lightly sweet, fruity scent of the oil and how soft it left my skin. I look forward to seeing how my skin responds to the oil over time and will report back with a more complete green beauty review of this gorgeous product. I must admit that the idea of “beauty sleep in a bottle” is a very appealing one to this mom of three who still sees sleep as a precious, and sometimes elusive, commodity.

Beauty Heroes March 2016 featuring SkinOwl Beauty Drops pm & Heroic Helichrysum Beauty Steam

Sidekick:
Beauty Heroes added another level of skin pampering to this month’s box by including a sample sized bottle of the SkinOwl Heroic Helichrysum Beauty Steam as a sidekick product (.6 oz., $14.40). I could not find the exact product on the SkinOwl site, but they do have this similar, Marigold Glow Beauty Steam in their shop. This absolutely beautiful blend of flower petals and herbs is designed to be added to boiling water and then used to gently steam the face. SkinOwl adds that after steaming, the warm tea can be applied to the face with a cloth, blanketing the skin in a nourishing compress of botanical benefits. Botanical steams and compresses have been emerging as a highly regarded, and nurturing skincare practice. I look forward to trying out this ritual. The sheer gorgeousness of the flower buds, petals, and herbs inspires appreciation for beauty and serenity.

Beauty Heroes March 2016 SkinOwl Heroic Helichrysum Beauty Steam close up

I could not find the Heroic Helichrysum ingredients listed anywhere, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say that it probably includes helichrysum, a flower believed to help heal wounds, even skin tone, and relieve inflammation (more on helichrysum here). I was also able to identify lavender buds and rose petals in the blend. I hesitate to guess at the other green leafy bits as many dried plants can look the same all chopped up, but I am confident given SkinOwl’s focus on ingredient efficacy that the blend will be a gift to my skin.

Beauty Heroes March 2016 unboxing & Review featuring SkinOwl

Final Thoughts:
This month’s box featuring SkinOwl products had a total value of $99.40. I continue to absolutely amazed by the value that Beauty Heroes provides each month for a $39.00 subscription. Once again, if you are interested in this month’s box it is still available for purchase through March 20th as long as supplies last. Subscription purchases made after March 20th will begin with the April box.

As I mention in the video, I am feeling a great deal of conflict about Beauty Heroes at the moment. They are without question one of my favorite subscription boxes of all time. I think that the work that they do to bring effective, safe, and conscious green beauty to their subscribers is outstanding. Moreover, I love that they educate their customers about ingredients to allow them to become more knowledgeable green beauty consumers. Lastly, the focus on luxury green beauty brands at an accessible price makes me truly feel pampered every month when I open the box, and every day when I use products that have made their way to my home through Beauty Heroes.

The conflict comes from my desire to introduce Crunchy Parent readers and viewers to a range of naturally-oriented subscription boxes across genres such as food, craft, children, green beauty, and more. Although I wish that I had the budget to add more boxes each month, I do not. I need to occasionally discontinue a subscription so that I can add something new. It’s breaking my heart a bit to think about a month without Beauty Heroes, but I think that a hiatus is probably in the near future so that I can focus the “bloggy subscription box budget” elsewhere for a bit.

I’d love to hear your thoughts about SkinOwl and Beauty Heroes. Have you ever tried a beauty steam or facial compress before? If you have any tips please leave them in the comments.

Beauty Heroes also sent a detailed enclosure reviewing the brand and products highlighted (more on that in a moment), as well a handy pocket guide listing both villain and superpower ingredients to notice in cosmetic, skincare, and beauty products.

This month’s expert selection comes from the brand Beautycounter. Beautycounter is on a mission to make safer products for healthier people. Motivated by the discovery that 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer, Beautycounter strives to reduce individual toxin exposure through safer skincare and cosmetics (and as one woman who has received a cancer diagnosis, I am certainly grateful for their efforts). Beautycounter maintains a list of over 1500 ingredients that they will not allow in their products. Focused on using organic and plant-based ingredients in combination with safer synthetic ingredients, Beautycounter has created a range of luxurious green beauty products that you can feel good about using.

Beauty Heroes February 2016 Beautycounter body oil

Beauty Heroes made good on their promise to add green cosmetic items to their boxes in 2016. In addition to the decadent Superhero product they added a sidekick with some colorful flair.

This month’s box was awash in pink, reminding me that February is all about love and tenderness. The box contained a beautiful full-size glass bottle of Beautycounter’s Rose Neroli Body Oil (2.7 oz., value $73.00). The formulation is a lightweight blend of nourishing oils including marula, argan, meadowfoam, rosehip, and grapeseed oils. Bitter orange flowers and rose otto lend a delicate floral scent that sets the perfect tone for February.

Beauty Heroes Beautycounter lip sheer

Beauty Heroes must have known that once my skin was was all hydrated and I was smelling softly of flowers, I would want a kiss of color on my lips. Like a good superhero, Beautycounter’s Lip Sheer came to the rescue. Outfitted in a beautiful golden case, the full-sized lip sheer in the Petal shade lends the lightest blush of soft pink to the lips (value $30.00). The hydrating lippie is scented with real vanilla and has a rating of 1 (low hazard) on the EWG Skin Deep Database. I am especially particular about green lip products, as these are the most frequently ingested simply by their use on the lips.

Beauty Heroes February 2016 unboxing & review

I must admit that as a green skincare enthusiast, I was a bit concerned what I heard that Beauty Heroes was going to be changing up their subscription to include cosmetic items. I loved that this month’s Superhero product was a luxurious item to pamper my skin from top to toe and I still received a flattering non-toxic cosmetic item in addition. The Beautycounter products feel and smell luxurious and are packaged beautifully. Using them feels special.

This month’s perfectly-pink box had a total value of $103.00. I continue to be delighted by the service that Beauty Heroes offers; allowing me to experience luxurious green beauty items every day at a substantially reduced price. As a full-time, at-home mom it is a special teat to be able to take time to care for myself. Using decadent products on my skin and face that smell, feel, and look beautiful take routine self-care to a level that feels like pampering. That can go a long way not just for my outside appearance, but for my psyche as well.

Once again, if you are interested in this month’s box it is still available for purchase through February 20th as long as supplies last. Subscription purchases made after February 20th will begin with the March box.

The box came with a big, bright “Beauty Heroes” label. I opened it to find an enclosure reviewing the brand and products highlighted (more on that in a moment), as well a handy pocket guide listing both villain and superpower ingredients to notice in cosmetic, skincare, and beauty products.

This month’s expert selection comes from the brand Osmia Organics. I had the opportunity to talk a bit with the Osmia Organics founder, Dr. Sarah Villafranco at A Night for Green Beauty this past summer. A former ER physician with a passion for healthy skincare, Sarah began making soap before expanding her formulations and her company to include skincare and natural perfumes. Osmia Organics, whose name references the ability to detect scent, places great importance on the quality and function of the ingredients in their products. As mentioned in the video, Sarah’s article about emulsifiers and their environmental impact left a lasting impression; giving me a better appreciation for body oils and healthier emulsifying agents.

Beauty Heroes surprised and delighted me by sending a box packed full of goodies this month. As with the November box, Beauty Heroes sent a pair of Superhero products (which always makes me think of the Wonder Twins because I’m over 40 and these are my reference points for such things). In addition, Beauty Heroes tucked in a helpful sidekick product, and a great accessory item a la Wonder Woman’s invisible jet.

Beauty Heroes January 2016-Osmia Organics face cream

This month’s box contained a full-size bottle of Osmia Organic’s Purely Simple Face Cream (1.7 oz., value $60.00). This aloe juice-based cream is lightweight and designed for those with normal or sensitive skin, in particular those who may have perioral dermatitis, a condition that has inspired many of Sarah’s gentle formulations.

My skin tends toward dryness, especially in the dry winter months so this may be too lightweight for me to use right now. I can see this cream being a good fit for my face during the more humid summer months when my skin needs less added moisture. It might also be a smart choice for Eva, whose almost-teenaged skin could benefit from a lightweight, gentle moisturizer in winter.

Beauty Heroes-Osmia Organics black clay soap and exclusive pre-launch nectar vital rose drops face serum

Partnered with the face cream was a full-size bar of Black Clay Facial Soap (2.25 oz., value $24.00). You can read more about the soap and how it compares to traditional African Black Soap here. Beauty Heroes also included a small soap saver (value $2.00), which is the perfect accessory to protect any bar soap from being softened and prematurely melted away by residual water.

The final treasure tucked into the box was the bonus sidekick item. This extra-special sidekick was an exclusive launch to Beauty Heroes members; a small dropper bottle of the yet-to-be-released Nectar Vital Rose Drops Face Serum (value $10.00). As the product has not yet been made available to the public, I was unable to find much information about the ingredients or the product online. I can say that it smells divine. There is the distinct scent of roses, but based on fragrance alone I would venture to guess that other florals and non-floral botanicals play a role as well. The serum is fairly light and easily absorbed, leaving a silky feeling on the skin. I often add several drops of facial serums or oils to my moisturizer step to enrich my moisturizer, which is precisely how Osmia Organics suggests using this precious product.

Crunchy Parent Beauty Heroes non-toxic organic green beauty subscription unboxing & review Osmia OrganicsJan 2016 – Version 3

I continue to be impressed with the quality of natural, green brands and products that Beauty Heroes brings to its members each month. There has been such exciting growth in the green beauty industry, especially among small companies driven by knowledgeable, passionate, creative individuals and teams. I so appreciate the extent to which Beauty Heroes researches their brand partners and curates great boxes month-to-month that over time build a high-quality and effective natural beauty collection. The value of this month’s box was an incredible $96.00.

Historically, Beauty Heroes has focused on products for skin, body, and hair. With the new year, Beauty Heroes has announced some new expansion plans to include cosmetic items as well. Beauty Heroes will aim to focus on universally-flattering shades to complement all of their members. I’m excited to see what these changes will bring in the months ahead. Beauty Heroes organic non-toxic green beauty subscription November 2015

The box came with a big, bright “Beauty Heroes” label. I opened it to find an enclosure reviewing the brand and products highlighted (more on that in a moment), as well as one of my favorite quotes from Maya Angalou (“When you know better, you do better.”), and a handy pocket guide listing both villain and superpower ingredients to notice in cosmetic, skincare, and beauty products. The enclosure also featured a cute quote from Rachel Zoe, “You can’t get dressed without good hair.” (In my high school English class, we would have called this foreshadowing.) Beauty Heroes included an additional card announcing an Instagram contest to win your next month’s box free, and a code for 15% off of all products purchased at the Beauty Heroes store. This discount is a monthly perk available to all members.

Beauty Heroes November 2015 box featuring Josh Rosebrook

This month’s expert selection comes from the brand Josh Rosebrook. I had the absolute pleasure of meeting and talking with Josh Rosebrook, the brand creator, at A Night for Green Beauty this past summer. Josh, and his company, are driven by a passion for bringing human connection and artisan crafting back to skincare and personal care products. Through a deep understanding and respect for the actions of plant botanicals, Josh infuses his products with ingredients to cleanse, exfoliate, detoxify, hydrate, nourish, and protect skin and hair. Going beyond a mere awareness of a single plant’s action on the hair or skin; Josh strives to create formulas that elevate the individual ingredients through synergistic blends. The ingredients in Josh Rosebrook products are organic or wildcrafted, and designed to provide the very best to your skin and hair.

Beauty Heroes Josh Rosebrook

Beauty Heroes threw a little curve ball this month; featuring two products in addition to a smaller sized “sidekick” product. This month’s box contained a full-size bottle of Josh Rosebrook Balance Shampoo (8 oz., value $30.00) and a full-size bottle of Josh Rosebrook Balance Conditioner (8 oz., value $30.00). As an ever-helpful sidekick, Beauty Heroes included a travel size bottle of Josh Rosebrook Firm Hold Hair Spray (2 oz., value $15.00).

Beauty Heroes luxury green beauty subscription box-Josh Rosebrook natural, organic hair care

The Josh Rosebrook Balance shampoo and conditioner are designed to meet the needs of those with normal to oily scalp conditions. Both products are packed with botanical ingredients to stimulate circulation to the scalp and encourage healthy hair growth. The Beauty Heroes enclosure highlighted alfalfa, burdock, and nettle as superpower ingredients to help clarify the hair and scalp; aloe, rose oil, and coconut oil to hydrate; calendula, and chamomile to calm; and rosehip seed oil to promote overall cellular health. In truth, these ingredients are just the tip of the plant-based iceberg of powerhouse ingredients packed into these formulations.

The ingredients in the hair spray read like a recipe, with a host of herbs like sage, rosemary, thyme, and oregano mixing with brown rice extract and yucca starch to create a spray that holds without flaking or being sticky. I almost wish that Josh made this product as a perfume. The aromatic and woody herbs blend with citrus and yang yang oils to create a scent that is both refreshing and grounded. Unlike conventional hair sprays, there is no sharp alcohol scent to make the eyes water (or the hair dry).

Of course, as important as the beautiful, balancing herbs included in the products is what the formulas leave out. They are free all from artificial perfumes, dyes, or other toxic ingredients, as well as being gluten-free, GMO-free, cruelty-free, and vegan. In fact, Josh Rosebrook regularly submits his products for testing by third-party labs, and routinely earns a distinction of a “zero-toxicity” rating for his formulations.

Beauty Heroes November subscription box featuring Josh Rpsebrook shampoo, conditioner, and hair spray

As mentioned in the video, I am a bit conflicted about this month’s Beauty Heroes box. I think that Beauty Heroes really shines in their curation not just within each box, but also with their overarching orchestration of the customer’s experience from month-to-month. I was excited to see a focus on haircare this month after last month featured products for cleansing the face, and September’s box provided both an eye serum and a facial moisturizer. Beauty Heroes seems to always deliver the type of product that I am craving, probably because they have stocked me so well in products to meet other needs in the months prior. Their plan to create a total luxury skin, hair, and personal care experience for their customers through their boxes is skillfully executed.

Although the choice of featuring haircare this month was spot-on, and I have been eager to try the Josh Rosebrook hair care line, the particular product formulations included in the box may not be a good fit for my hair. I have thick, wavy, voluminous hair that can be corse and dry (see the unboxing video for a better sense of my hair’s natural personality). My overall constitution, including my skin and scalp tends toward dryness, especially as the fall weather rolls into the Midwest. I would have been over the moon to see Beauty Heroes send Josh Rosebrook’s Nourish shampoo and conditioner, which are made for individuals with normal to dry scalps. The Balance products do contain some hydrating ingredients, but I suspect that the clarifying ingredients targeting excess oil may be overly drying for me.

Even though this box may not have been a complete home run for me, I continue to be a big fan of the Beauty Heroes concept and of the high-quality brands and products that they have represented to date. The boxes always deliver a tremendous value for the price, with this month’s box valuing $75.00. Beauty Heroes allows me to integrate luxury green beauty into my life on a regular basis at a sustainable and affordable price, something that I truly appreciate. It can be difficult at times to squelch the mommy guilt when I purchase or do things for myself. Beauty Heroes takes care of me with the quality of green beauty products that I most want to use without me feeling like the Veruca Salt of the family budget.

I would love to see Beauty Heroes add a short member questionnaire about skin and hair type to allow for some personalization of the products provided, since most lines create formulations for multiple varieties. This would continue to allow for partnership with a single brand and focus on a featured product genre while allowing the customer to experience the product formulation best suited for them. Of course, Beauty Heroes does release their selection on the first of every month. Conservative individuals can wait to see the month’s products and formulations before purchasing the box, but I would still prefer to see a way to make every month’s formulation a perfect fit so that I can be included in the fun of each monthly discovery.

I would welcome hearing from anyone with normal to dry hair who has used the Josh Rosebrook Balance products. Do you think that I should give them a try? On one hand I am very tempted, but on the other hand I would hate to waste good product on the wrong head of hair and be disappointed by the results.

If the November box selection sounds like the right fit for you, be sure to purchase by November 15th. All subscriptions after the 15th of the month will receive the December box as their first delivery. Regardless of when you order, use code HEROLOVE for $10 off of your first box.

Beauty Heroes Subscription Box Unboxing and Review-October 2015

Beauty Heroes Luxury Green Beauty Subscription unboxing & review Natural non-toxic Octuber 2015

Beauty Heroes is a luxe green beauty subscription service (formerly Spa Heroes). The Beauty Heroes mission is to provide their customers with products from the very best non-toxic, clean, green beauty brands. Each month Beauty Heroes sends one full size luxury product, sometimes with a smaller bonus item (because every superhero loves a good sidekick). Products are chosen to fit with the season, and are screened to avoid an impressive laundry list of villain ingredients such as parabens, mineral oil, and triclosan; and to include natural superpower ingredients to nurture your skin such as turmeric, reishi mushroom, and sea buckthorn. Beauty Heroes boxes cost $39.00/month (shipping included) and are less with multi-month subscriptions. Subscribe now and use code HEROLOVE to get $10 off of your first box. Orders placed by October 15th will receive the box reviewed here, while supplies last. Orders placed after the 15th will receive the November box as their first box.

I purchased this box and was not compensated in any way for this review, although review may contain affiliate links. All opinions are my own. To see my other Beauty Heroes unboxings and reviews, look here.

If you would like to see the live-action unboxing, please enjoy the video unboxing below. If you prefer to skip right to the product close-ups and details, scroll down past the video.

The box came with a big, bright “Beauty Heroes” label. I opened it to find an enclosure reviewing the brand and products highlighted (more on that in a moment), as well as one of my favorite quotes from Maya Angalou. First-time subscribers also receive a handy pocket guide listing both villain and superpower ingredients to notice in cosmetic, skincare, and beauty products. I received the guide with my first box in September so it is not pictured below. I think that this pocket guide is great to carry around as a reference when shopping for personal care items.

This month’s expert selection comes from the new-to-me brand, In Fiore. In Fiore was founded in 1999 by Julie Elliott to blend apothecary traditions with modern luxury, maintaining a strong emphasis on botanical aromatics. With a focus on using the highest quality floral ingredients to evoke a luxe sensory experience, In Fiore uses organic, wildcrafted, and biodynamic botanical ingredients from around the world; bottling the results beautifully to extend the spa experience into one’s home.

Beauty Heroes In Fiore Treate Cleansing Emulsion

Beauty Heroes chose In Fiore’s Treate Cleansing Emulsion to highlight as their full-size expert selection of the month (4.2 oz., value $58.00). They noted the superpower ingredients aloe vera leaf juice, rose flower hydrosol, rosehip fruit extract, calendula flower extract, and dandelion root extract; listing anti-aging, calming, clearing, and hydrating among their many benefits to the skin. If you happen to be wondering what the difference is between a hydrosol and an extract, I have more about that here. Beauty Heroes also added that the cleansing emulsion is vegan, cruelty-free, GMO-free, and free of gluten.

In Fiore Treate Cleansing Emulsion-Beauty Heroes

Not wanting to force our hero to fly solo, Beauty Heroes included a travel size bottle of In Fiore’s Lustra Illuminating Essence as a faithful sidekick (1 oz, value $30.00). Working as a team, the two products can be used in the In Fiore signature 4-2-4 cleansing ritual, inspired by Asian cleansing tradition. Beauty Heroes enclosed In Fiore’s brochure describing the 4-2-4 cleansing ritual which begins with four minutes of massaging the Lustra essence onto the face and neck. A series of eight illustrations guide you through the massage sequence, which appears to be designed to lift the skin, stimulate circulation, and promote movement of the lymph system. Following four minutes of massage with the Lustra essence, the Treate Cleansing Emulsion is layered atop the essence and the massage sequence is continued for another two minutes. When that time is complete, the face and neck are rinsed with warm water for two minutes, followed by two minutes of cold water rinsing.

Beauty Heroes October 2015 subscription In Fiore Lustra Illuminating Essence

I was excited to try this ritual and was grateful that Beauty Heroes included both products to allow for the more complete experience. The Lustra essence is an oil-based cleanser, blending light oils such as grapeseed, jojoba, avocado, and castor oil and infusing the mix with jasmine extract, rosemary, arnica, cypress, and other botanicals. The essence has a heady jasmine fragrance and a silky feel on the skin. I have used oil cleansers in the past and enjoy them, but I appreciated the added ritual of massaging my face and neck for the prescribed time, and as illustrated. I could certainly feel the stimulating effects of the massage, and my skin “waking up” in response.

The In Fiore 4-2-4 system

The In Fiore 4-2-4 system

Initially I thought that I was to rinse the essence before using the emulsion (this is how I have approached multi-step Korean beauty cleansing in the past), however In Fiore instructed me to layer the Treate emulsion over the essence and continue with two minutes of slow massage. The emulsion is similar to a light lotion in its texture, and less aromatic than the essence, although still floral in its fragrance. It paired well with the essence, which helped it to glide smoothly over my skin throughout the massage. Once the time was complete, I finished the cleanse with the four minute warm/cold water rinse as directed, even though I am not at all a fan of ending a cleansing experience with a cold water rinse (this applies to showers and hair rinses as well). I find the experience uncomfortably shocking, although I know that the shock is what makes it so stimulating for circulation and for the lymph system. Perhaps I should try to think of it as exhilarating or refreshing.

In Fiore Lustra Essence and Treate Emulsion

In Fiore Lustra Essence and Treate Emulsion

In total, the ritual experience was a bit reminiscent of the things that I have done in the past to stimulate my circulatory and lymphatic drainage systems to help eliminate toxins following my cancer-related procedures. I can certainly understand how these invigorating movements can increase blood flow and move congested fluid from the face and neck, which I imagine would help to ease puffiness. As mentioned in the video, I also appreciated that all massaging motions were in an upwards direction to prevent tugging skin in a way that might encourage sagging.

Spending ten minutes cleaning my face is not always a practical option, but I do think that I could do a more abbreviated cleanse in the morning and commit to the 4-2-4 ritual in the evening when I am less hurried. I think that it would be a wonderful way to unwind from the day and would feel very indulgent. I left the experience feeling like I had done something special for my skin. My face and neck were exceptionally soft and I smelled beautiful (I may have made several family members sniff me).

Beauty Heroes Luxe green beauty subscription box October 2015 featuring In Fiore

I think that the curation and branding of Beauty Heroes is so clever and well-executed. The concept of green beauty saving our skin and bodies from evil toxic ingredients and enhancing them through ingredient superpowers resonates with me. The packaging of the monthly expert selection with the little superhero mask is eye-catching and memorable. Tucking in the helpful sidekick product is an adorable way to carry through the superhero theme, in addition to being practical. Brands typically develop the products in their line to work well synergistically. It is wonderful to be able to not just sample a single item, but to use multiple products from a featured green beauty line. The full-size hero products and generous trial-sized sidekicks allow for use over an extended period of time to really get a sense of product efficacy.

I have been incredibly impressed with the brands that Beauty Heroes has featured. The brands represent a growing area in the green beauty market that I have been so excited to see; luxury green beauty often rooted in herbalism or plant-based tradition. Opening my Beauty Heroes box feels like a a trip back to A Night for Green Beauty. I enjoy receiving products from familiar luxe green beauty brands and being introduced to new brands that I quickly come to love. The value of this month’s box was $88.00, which I think is a fantastic value for the $39.00 box price. Beauty Heroes allows me to integrate luxury green beauty into my life on a regular basis at a sustainable and affordable price. I truly am beginning to feel like I step into a spa every time I enter my bathroom and use my growing collection of luxe natural products. I think that it is safe to say that Beauty Heroes is my favorite beauty subscription to date. I feel like it was tailor made for me, but I imagine that anyone passionate about green beauty with an appreciation for high quality luxury would feel the same.

I would love to hear your thoughts or experiences with Beauty Heroes. If you want to get your hands on the October box, do not delay. You must order on or before October 15th to receive this box. Remember to use the code HEROLOVE for $10 off of your first box. Orders placed October 16 or later will receive the November box as their first shipment.

Beauty Heroes Subscription Box Unboxing and Review-September 2015

Beauty Heroes natural, green, subscription box

Beauty Heroes is a recently rebranded subscription service (formerly Spa Heroes). The Beauty Heroes mission is to provide products from the best of the best non-toxic, clean, green beauty brands to their customers. Each month Beauty Heroes sends one full size product, sometimes with a bonus surprise. Orders placed by September 15th will receive the September box reviewed here, while supplies last.

When I first discovered Beauty Heroes, I mistakenly thought that they were based in the UK and did not ship to the US (I have no idea why). I was so happy to learn that I was wrong. Beauty Heroes is based in the US and will ship not only to the US but also to the UK, Canada, Australia, Sweden, and France (see site for details).

I purchased this box and was not compensated in any way for this review, although review may contain affiliate links. All opinions are my own.

If you would like to see the live-action unboxing, please enjoy the video unboxing below. If you prefer to skip right to the product close-ups and details, scroll down past the video.

The box came with a big, bright “Beauty Heroes” label. I opened it to find an enclosure announcing this month’s expert selection; listing the ingredients and highlighting why it was chosen (more on that in a moment). The enclosure also included an apropos quote from Maya Angalou, “When you know better, you do better,” and a handy pocket guide listing both villain and superpower ingredients to notice in cosmetic, skincare, and beauty products. I think that this pocket guide would be great to carry around as a reference when shopping for personal care items.

When I lifted up the puff of protective packing shred, I was delighted to see this month’s product mysteriously shrouded in tissue, and decked out in a bright red bow and matching red superhero mask. I thought that it was just adorable and made a clear and lasting impression that some beauty products can be superheroes for our health and beauty, whereas others may not. Tucked in next to my masked superhero product was a faithful “bonus” sidekick.

The brand being highlighted this month is Kahina Giving Beauty. I had become familiar with the brand when researching for A Night for Green Beauty. I had learned that Kahina is a woman-owned company started Katharine L’Heureux after travels to Morocco introduced her to argan oil, a seemingly wondrous skincare ingredient that the Berber women of Morocco have been using for generations to protect their skin against the rough desert conditions. Katharine brought together her years of experience working in public relations for many natural food and beauty brands, along with her philanthropic nature to develop Kahina Giving Beauty. Kahina partnered with the Berber women to establish cooperatives of women to provide high quality argan oil for the beauty line; providing these women with a fair wages and a sustainable source of income. For more on this incredible brand and the story behind their unique packaging, you can see the video above.

Just prior to A Night for Green Beauty I had cashed in Birchbox points that I had been squirreling away and had ordered a number of green beauty products that I wanted to try, including the Kahina facial cleanser. I have been using the cleanser for the last month or so and have been very happy with its efficacy, and its light, natural scent. My skin has been soft and balanced. When Beauty Heroes released its September pick and announced that it would feature a full size Kahina Giving Beauty product with a travel size sidekick, I was sold.

Beauty Heroes September 2015 subscription bo Kahina Giving Beauty Eye Serum

When I unwrapped my Beauty Hero product, I was gazing at a full size bottle of the Kahina Eye Serum (15 ml, value $78.00). As mentioned, Beauty Heroes had already revealed the box contents, so I knew that this was on the way to me, and I was very eager to try it. I have been on the lookout for a nourishing eye product. I tend to have a lot of darkness under my eyes, which I do not love. I also am very sensitive to eye products. Many of them have left me with scaly patches under my eyes that take a long time to correct. I was on the prowl for a gentle and effective eye serum that would be green and healthy for me as well. Facial and eye serums can be quite an investment so I was grateful to have the opportunity to try this eye serum from a trusted green beauty brand for a discounted price. I will add that a little drop of the serum is plenty for the area around both of my eyes so I can see this bottle lasting a very long time. The serum in light and non-greasy. It absorbs quickly and has a very gentle, natural scent. I have only been using it for a couple of days so I cannot comment much about efficacy, but I will say that the skin around my eyes is very soft and I have not had any sign of the serum drying out the super-sensitive skin under my eyes.

Beauty Heroes non-toxic Kahina Giving Beauty facial lotion

The sidekick product tucked in next to our hero was a generous travel size bottle of Kahina’s Facial Lotion (30 ml, stated value $37.00). This lightweight moisturizer also has a natural, gentle scent. It spread over my skin easily and absorbed quickly on its own, and I liked that I could enrich it even more for evening or dry weather by adding a drop or two of a facial oil (as I am prone to doing because I like to gild lilies). Moreover, in addition to being natural, mildly scented, and pleasant to use, both products came in Kahina’s beautiful dark glass bottle with pump dispensers, allowing me to use just the right amount of product and avoid contamination from the outside world (basically, my fingers).

Beauty Heroes September subscription box Kahina Giving Beauty

I am beyond thrilled with my first Beauty Heroes experience. The product quality, packaging, information, and value were all excellent. I must admit that I get a bit nervous with subscription services that send only one main product each month because it can be quite a gamble. I feel far safer betting on Beauty Heroes after seeing the brands that they have chosen to work with in the past and the extent to which they scrutinize products to make sure that they are sending out the true heroes of green beauty. Their list of avoided villain ingredients is the most extensive that I have seen of any green beauty subscription to date. In addition, Beauty Heroes releases the contents of their monthly box at the start of the month, allowing the month-to-month subscribers to skip the month for whatever reason if they wish (see Beauty Heroes FAQs for details). Beauty Heroes also maintains a shop of products from many of the brands that they have featured. All Beauty Heroes members are offered a 15% discount off of shop purchases at any time. In addition, the hero theme is carried out so brilliantly through the product inserts, consumer education, and packaging. I was right in my video prediction. That mask did make its way into the children’s hands. The next time I went into Asher’s room, I spied Bongo giving me the side eye.

Beauty Heroes mask finds a new superhero

I would love to hear your thoughts or experiences with Beauty Heroes. If you want to get your hands on this fantastic Kahina box, do not delay. You must order on or before Tuesday September 15th to receive this box. Remember to use the code HEROLOVE for $10 off of your first box. Orders placed September 16 or later will receive the October box as their first shipment.

Crunchy Parent’s Ultimate Guide to Crunchy-Friendly Subscription Boxes-Fall 2015 Update

For those seeking subscriptions for organic, eco-friendly, non-toxic, green beauty, food-allergy friendly, pregnant, new baby, fair trade, indie, and other crunchy awesomeness.

For those seeking subscriptions for organic, eco-friendly, non-toxic, green beauty, food-allergy friendly, pregnant, new baby, fair trade, indie, and other crunchy awesomeness.

Crunchy, green living is on the rise, and there has been tremendous growth in the area of natural, conscious, and otherwise crunchy subscription box offerings. The Fall update of the Crunchy Parent Ultimate List of Crunchy-Friendly Subscription Boxes follows. All subscription services that are new or new-to-me since the summer update have been indicated in bold. If you are wondering how I came to compile this list, keep reading. If you just want to get right to the list, scroll on down.

As I mentioned briefly in this post I have been making conscious attempts to make self-care a higher priority in the last several years. Parenting can be all-consuming, at least it has been for me many times, and I tended to seriously neglect myself. My cancer diagnosis almost five years ago was a wake up call that I absolutely needed to take better care of myself mentally and physically if I wanted to be able to continue to be a good parent to my children, and to live a healthier and more balanced life. I also wanted to feel better about myself and how I presented myself to the world. Realistically, I still was not going to have oodles of “me” time, and being able to get away from home to do things alone is even more challenging.

Moreover, although I had been interested in naturally-based personal care items since I was a teenager, my diagnosis shifted green beauty from an interest to an absolute non-negotiable. Skincare, haircare, body care, and cosmetic products simply had to be no- or low-toxin for me to use them. I would rather go without than slather myself with ingredients that might make it harder to stay healthy, but I really didn’t know where to begin. My skincare products had distilled down to aloe gel, shea butter, and coconut oil and they just weren’t cutting it. So, I decided that one aspect of my self-care plan would be to join some monthly subscription services.

Just in case you’re unfamiliar, subscription services send out a “mystery” package (usually monthly) of products in sample or full sizes for you to try that fit within a certain theme such as eco-friendly beauty and skincare products, or gluten free snacks. I figured that by joining a service, I would get a special package (or more) each month just for me with products to encourage me to pamper myself. It would also help me discover new natural, organic, or otherwise eco-friendly products that had already been screened and curated by companies with values like my own. Once I got my boxes, I could have some R&R time with a new face mask after the kids went to bed at night, or if I had an occasion when I might want to wear lipstick, I might actually own one that I felt good about using. I have been receiving subscription boxes for almost two years now, and I must say that it has been great! Not only have I been enjoying receiving amazing green beauty items, but I have found boxes to promote mindfulness and balance in my life, to support my yoga practice, to discover new food-allergy friendly foods for our family, and more.

I personally found it overwhelming at first to select a couple of subscriptions to try. I always want to know all of my options to allow for informed decisions. Additionally, there are countless services available, with many different target markets and missions. There are new subscriptions being introduced and old ones phasing out all of the time. I decided to put my well-honed research skills to work (they didn’t give me that Ph.D. for nothing), and compile the most comprehensive list that I could of subscription boxes that represent values or areas of interest that are consistent with living a crunchy, natural, green lifestyle.

I thought that I would try to save you some of the trouble that I went through. I have compiled the most comprehensive list of subscription services currently available that may appeal to people of the crunchy mindset; wherever they may be along the crunchy continuum or whichever aspect of crunchiness is important to them. I have tried to include beauty and lifestyle boxes that might be organic, or vegan; that might be eco-friendly, GMO-free, or support charities. Food boxes might be gluten, nut, and/or dairy free. They may feature organic or non-GMO products, or provide pre-packaged produce all ready to juice for your next cleanse or to boost a new health practice. I’ve listed herbal boxes, essential oil boxes, fair trade boxes, and eco-friendly boxes for the expecting or new mama. Boxes for children likely feature organic products, high-quality wooden/battery-free toys, or promote natural handmade crafts, storytelling, and more. There is even a toy rental subscription service included. Some of the subscription services are large and well-established. Others are small, limited, indie subscriptions or may be just starting out. In any case, I hope that you will find what you are looking for.

For the sake of brevity I have included shipping information assuming shipping in the United States. Many of these companies may send boxes elsewhere for an additional cost. Please see individual sites for information. I have attempted to screen companies to most closely adhere to natural personal and family living ideals, but I cannot speak to the specifics of any individual subscription, nor am I recommending any of these services over any other. I am attempting to sample and review as many of these subscriptions as possible to allow for a more in-depth look at what each service provides. Wherever possible, I have included a link to my unboxing and reviews following a subscription’s description. If you have any personal experiences that you wish to share, or if you know of any subscriptions that you think should be added to this list, please mention it in the comments.
