For those seeking subscriptions for organic, eco-friendly, non-toxic, green beauty, food-allergy friendly, pregnant, new baby, fair trade, indie, and other crunchy awesomeness.

Crunchy, green living is on the rise, and there has been tremendous growth in the area of natural, conscious, and otherwise crunchy subscription box offerings. The Fall update of the Crunchy Parent Ultimate List of Crunchy-Friendly Subscription Boxes follows. All subscription services that are new or new-to-me since the summer update have been indicated in bold. If you are wondering how I came to compile this list, keep reading. If you just want to get right to the list, scroll on down.

As I mentioned briefly in this post I have been making conscious attempts to make self-care a higher priority in the last several years. Parenting can be all-consuming, at least it has been for me many times, and I tended to seriously neglect myself. My cancer diagnosis almost five years ago was a wake up call that I absolutely needed to take better care of myself mentally and physically if I wanted to be able to continue to be a good parent to my children, and to live a healthier and more balanced life. I also wanted to feel better about myself and how I presented myself to the world. Realistically, I still was not going to have oodles of “me” time, and being able to get away from home to do things alone is even more challenging.

Moreover, although I had been interested in naturally-based personal care items since I was a teenager, my diagnosis shifted green beauty from an interest to an absolute non-negotiable. Skincare, haircare, body care, and cosmetic products simply had to be no- or low-toxin for me to use them. I would rather go without than slather myself with ingredients that might make it harder to stay healthy, but I really didn’t know where to begin. My skincare products had distilled down to aloe gel, shea butter, and coconut oil and they just weren’t cutting it. So, I decided that one aspect of my self-care plan would be to join some monthly subscription services.

Just in case you’re unfamiliar, subscription services send out a “mystery” package (usually monthly) of products in sample or full sizes for you to try that fit within a certain theme such as eco-friendly beauty and skincare products, or gluten free snacks. I figured that by joining a service, I would get a special package (or more) each month just for me with products to encourage me to pamper myself. It would also help me discover new natural, organic, or otherwise eco-friendly products that had already been screened and curated by companies with values like my own. Once I got my boxes, I could have some R&R time with a new face mask after the kids went to bed at night, or if I had an occasion when I might want to wear lipstick, I might actually own one that I felt good about using. I have been receiving subscription boxes for almost two years now, and I must say that it has been great! Not only have I been enjoying receiving amazing green beauty items, but I have found boxes to promote mindfulness and balance in my life, to support my yoga practice, to discover new food-allergy friendly foods for our family, and more.

I personally found it overwhelming at first to select a couple of subscriptions to try. I always want to know all of my options to allow for informed decisions. Additionally, there are countless services available, with many different target markets and missions. There are new subscriptions being introduced and old ones phasing out all of the time. I decided to put my well-honed research skills to work (they didn’t give me that Ph.D. for nothing), and compile the most comprehensive list that I could of subscription boxes that represent values or areas of interest that are consistent with living a crunchy, natural, green lifestyle.

I thought that I would try to save you some of the trouble that I went through. I have compiled the most comprehensive list of subscription services currently available that may appeal to people of the crunchy mindset; wherever they may be along the crunchy continuum or whichever aspect of crunchiness is important to them. I have tried to include beauty and lifestyle boxes that might be organic, or vegan; that might be eco-friendly, GMO-free, or support charities. Food boxes might be gluten, nut, and/or dairy free. They may feature organic or non-GMO products, or provide pre-packaged produce all ready to juice for your next cleanse or to boost a new health practice. I’ve listed herbal boxes, essential oil boxes, fair trade boxes, and eco-friendly boxes for the expecting or new mama. Boxes for children likely feature organic products, high-quality wooden/battery-free toys, or promote natural handmade crafts, storytelling, and more. There is even a toy rental subscription service included. Some of the subscription services are large and well-established. Others are small, limited, indie subscriptions or may be just starting out. In any case, I hope that you will find what you are looking for.

For the sake of brevity I have included shipping information assuming shipping in the United States. Many of these companies may send boxes elsewhere for an additional cost. Please see individual sites for information. I have attempted to screen companies to most closely adhere to natural personal and family living ideals, but I cannot speak to the specifics of any individual subscription, nor am I recommending any of these services over any other. I am attempting to sample and review as many of these subscriptions as possible to allow for a more in-depth look at what each service provides. Wherever possible, I have included a link to my unboxing and reviews following a subscription’s description. If you have any personal experiences that you wish to share, or if you know of any subscriptions that you think should be added to this list, please mention it in the comments.

Cosmic Box Indie Subscription Unboxing and Review-September 2015

Crunchy Parent Cosmic Box Subscription Unboxing & Review September 2015

The Cosmic Box is a recently launched indie subscription service aimed at sending you a cosmically amazing care package for the soul. This lifestyle box is curated by a holistic nurse, and is designed for the free-spirited and eco-conscious. Each box includes a mix of 3-6 trial and full size products, or 1-2 luxury full size items. Every box is hand packed and sent with heaps of love. You will find items ranging from toxin free skin care, organic/gmo free artisan edibles, unique home goods, gems and more. A portion of the sale from every box goes to support a charity, which varies from month-to-month. The September and October Cosmic Boxes are already sold out, but orders are currently being taken for the November Box.

Boxes cost $27 per month, which includes shipping. I purchased this box and was not compensated in any way for this review. All opinions are my own. You can check out my other Cosmic Box reviews here.

If you would like to see the live-action unboxing, please enjoy the video unboxing below. If you prefer to skip right to the product close-ups and details, scroll down past the video.

The box came well-packaged in a small white box, which is only significant if you know that the past two months the box was brown. This is probably of little interest to most everyone but me, however it is distinctive that the box varies in size, shape, and color each month. Keeps me guessing! Everything arrived to me safe and intact. Cosmic Box generally is very eco-conscious with their shipping materials, using boxes just large enough to fit the goodies of the month, and packaging with tissue paper and paper shread rather than plastic or styrofoam.

The Cosmic Box review 12 Gypsy Toner

As with my last box, there was a small enclosure card that gave a bit of information about the items in the box and included a little note and photo from Kat, the founder and curator of The Cosmic Box. Kat also runs a sister company, Wild Honey Apothecary that makes small-batch, skincare and body items using wild harvested botanicals. As of this month, the website description of The Cosmic Box indicates that each month will feature a Wild Honey Apothecary product. The first tissue-wrapped bundle that I unwrapped was a travel size bottle of Wild Honey Apothecary 12 Herbs Gypsy Toner (1 oz., value $21.00). The ancient recipe infuses twelve organic herbs into apple cider vinegar using the light of the moon and of the sun to enhance the infusion. The brew, which also includes honey and witch hazel can be used as an occasional hair rinse as well, but with my head of hair, and ounce would be gone in a snap. I will stick to using the toner on my face. I found it somewhat astringent but not terribly harsh. It removed the last bits of soil and oil remaining on my face after I cleansed, and it smelled like a really delicious salad; reminiscent of cucumbers, vinegar and herbs. The website does not list the specific ingredients, but I do not have any allergies or concerns about topical use of herbs. Those who may have a sensitivity to particular plants may want to inquire about the ingredients before using.

Cosmic Box unakite tumbled stone bracelet

The next item that I found in the box was a sweet little drawstring bag, stamped with an owl, the “spirit animal” of The Cosmic Box. Inside the bag was an unakite tumbled stone bracelet. I was not familiar with unakite before, at least not by name. According to The Cosmic Box, unakite helps to rid negative and stagnant energies. I appreciated that the bracelet was strung onto a stretchy cord. I have large wrists and sometimes standard fitted bracelets won’t work for me. This bracelet was easy to take on and off. The stones are substantial in size and weight, and a very pretty mottled olive and salmon color. I am not sure how I feel about the bracelet just yet. I am oddly sensitive to the feeling of bracelets moving around on my wrists so I’m seeing if I can get used to this one or if it is destined to be sent along to someone who is less “Princess and the Pea”-like about her wrists. TCB did not list a value for this item and I found tremendous variability online when I searched for tumbled stone unakite bracelets (e.g., $1.50-$30.00+) so I am not quite sure how to value it here.

Cosmic Box sage smudging and S. W. Basics lip balm

Making the box smell absolutely delicious was my next discovery, a 6” white sage smudging wand (estimated value $6.00). If you have read any number of my prior posts you know that I have an affinity for white sage and many plants of the Southwest. I find the smell to be delightful. White sage is traditionally used for smudging purposes; to clear negative energies from a space or an individual. Since moving in August I have received sage, cedar, sweetgrass, and other smudging plants from numerous subscription boxes. I think that the Universe was making its point clear, and I smudged the house thoroughly with sage (to clear negative energies) and then with sweetgrass (to invite positive energies) within days of this unboxing. Let the good times roll!

The final item in the box had been teased earlier in the month; a cocoa butter lip balm from S. W. Basics (.15 oz, value $4.00). I was familiar with S. W. Basics from A Night for Green Beauty but I have not tried any of their products, so I was excited to get this balm. The balm is organic and fair trade, and contains only three ingredients to nourish lips. As it happens, I absolutely adore the scent of cocoa butter (when I worked at The Body Shop back in high school, their cocoa butter stick was my favorite product based on smell factor alone). I am all too happy to have a lip balm with no added scent whatsoever. We also use loads of lip balms in the fall and winter so I am confident that this will be put to good use very soon.

I have been noticing the “crunchy, zen, mindful” subscription box market growing significantly in recent months and I think that The Cosmic Box is a great option in the zen lifestyle genre. I think that the box is well-curated, and well-rounded. I appreciate having someone like-minded searching out products that are a good fit for my lifestyle and my values and then sending them to me to discover and enjoy. I also like knowing that Kat, the box curator, has a hand in the making of at least one item in every box.

Cosmic Box subscription September 2015 complete unboxing review

The overall value of this month’s box was a little difficult to estimate given the wide variety in unquote bracelet pricing, but I think that it is fair to say the value was around $45.00-$50.00, which I think is a good value for a lifestyle box of this genre that emphasizes indie small-batch products, and quality ingredients. I am very much anticipating the October box, which will have a Supermoon/Harvest Moon theme. Our whole family was captivated by last week’s red, supermoon, lunar eclipse and I love the idea of that special energy being captured in a box. As mentioned above, the box is already sold out, but I will review it for those who were unable to get one. TCB boxes have been selling out in advance the last couple of months, so if you’re thinking about grabbing the November box, you might want to act fast.

Have you tried out The Cosmic Box yet? How do you think it compares to other crunchy, zen lifestyle boxes?

GlobeIn Benefit Basket Subscription Unboxing and Review-September 2015

Crunchy Parent GlobeIn Benefit Basket Fair Trade Subscription unboxing & review September 2015 picture

GlobeIn is a subscription service bringing fairly traded artisan items from around the world. Their Artisan Box subscription packs 4-6 items from a selected theme into one of their signature, handwoven, Mexican baskets for $35.00/month. Their newly introduced Benefit Basket subscription takes one of the items from the monthly Artisan Box and sends it to subscribers in a Mexican basket for $19.99/month (less with multi-month subscriptions). Each month’s basket features a different theme. The September theme was “Wellness.”

I purchased this box and all opinions are my own.

If you would like to see the live-action unboxing please enjoy the video unboxing below. If you would like to skip along to the photos and valuing information, scroll right on down.

I really liked the GlobeIn shipping box. It has great artwork and I really liked the graphic “clue” about this month’s theme and what was inside. It definitely has a unique personality. One of the reasons that I felt confident giving this subscription a try was because I knew that each month’s box would include one of GlobeIn’s beautiful palm leaf baskets (value $12.00). I really appreciate the reusable packaging and the covered basket is such a versatile size. I can see using a collection of these to organize and brighten up a space. They are a great size to hold anything from craft supplies, crayons, toys, shells, rocks, and more. I can also see using these as reusable gift wrap. They would add so much to the presentation of a gift. I was pleased to see that the basket that I received this month was different than last month. I like the variety.

GlobeIn Benefit palm leaf basket Mexico

I think that it is a real strength of GlobeIn that they make such a point to highlight the artisans and their stories. GlobeIn provides the picture of the basket maker as well as information about him or her (e.g., how working with GlobeIn provides financial or stability to them, their families, and their community). GlobeIn also encloses great photos and information about the artist behind the item included in the monthly basket. In addition, they include a longer trifold insert giving geographic information about the item’s origin. I really like this component and can see it folding especially well into a homeschool curriculum. I enjoy using the photos, maps, and information included to teach my kids more about world geography, world economy, and responsible consumerism.

GlobeIn Benefit Basket fair trade blessing bag from Ghana

I opened this month’s basket, crafted by Juan, to find a beautiful orange batik blessing bag, (value $12.00), made by an artist named Rosa from Ghana. The bag was made from hand batiked cloth and lined with repurposed plastic water bags; making the bag interior water and spill resistant. The interior also featured a tiny pocket made from the batik fabric (see video for a closer look). The zipper was embellished with a zipper pull fashioned from recycled polished glass. The insert explained that the zipper pull could also be removed from the bag and used as a keychain, which I thought was a great idea. I can never seem to have enough keychains. GlobeIn also included coupon code BESTFRIENDS for $20 off of any 3+ month Artisan Box subscription.

The insert explained how ABAN seeks to provide work opportunities to homeless women in Ghana, many of whom are young mothers. The program trains the women in skills such as sewing and fashion, as well as provides more general education and other skills to the women and their children, in addition to providing nutritious meals. ABAN has developed a unique solution to Ghana’s garbage program by repurposing plastic water bags (Ghana’s only source of clean drinking water) into fabric for goods such as the Blessing Bag in this month’s basket. Through ABAN’s efforts, over 500,000 plastic water bags have been saved from trash heaps and up-cycled as ABAN products.

GlobeIn Benefit basket palm leaf artisan made

In total this month’s GlobeIn basket had a retail value of $24.00, which includes the GlobeIn basket. I think this is a good value for the price that I paid, and maintains the fair trade spirit of the box. I really like what a “feel good” box this is. GlobeIn takes such care to connect its customers to the artisans who produce the items for the basket. That is really shown through the beautiful inserts, text, and photographs. I think that the Benefit Basket option is a good one to get a taste of what GlobeIn offers, although you may find yourself quickly pining for the full-size Artisan Basket option. I am looking forward to receiving my next GlobeIn Benefit basket, which is going to feature a “Cozy” theme, perfect for fall when the air chills and coziness sounds very tempting.

What do you think of GlobeIn’s new Benefit Basket option?

Beauty Heroes Subscription Box Unboxing and Review-September 2015

Beauty Heroes natural, green, subscription box

Beauty Heroes is a recently rebranded subscription service (formerly Spa Heroes). The Beauty Heroes mission is to provide products from the best of the best non-toxic, clean, green beauty brands to their customers. Each month Beauty Heroes sends one full size product, sometimes with a bonus surprise. Products are chosen to fit with the season, and are screened to avoid an impressive laundry list of villain ingredients such as parabens, mineral oil, and triclosan; and to include natural superpower ingredients to nurture your skin such as turmeric, reishi mushroom, and sea buckthorn. Beauty Heroes boxes cost $39.00/month (shipping included) and are less with multi-month subscriptions. Subscribe now and use code HEROLOVE to get $10 off of your first box. Orders placed by September 15th will receive the September box reviewed here, while supplies last.

When I first discovered Beauty Heroes, I mistakenly thought that they were based in the UK and did not ship to the US (I have no idea why). I was so happy to learn that I was wrong. Beauty Heroes is based in the US and will ship not only to the US but also to the UK, Canada, Australia, Sweden, and France (see site for details).

I purchased this box and was not compensated in any way for this review, although review may contain affiliate links. All opinions are my own.

If you would like to see the live-action unboxing, please enjoy the video unboxing below. If you prefer to skip right to the product close-ups and details, scroll down past the video.

The box came with a big, bright “Beauty Heroes” label. I opened it to find an enclosure announcing this month’s expert selection; listing the ingredients and highlighting why it was chosen (more on that in a moment). The enclosure also included an apropos quote from Maya Angalou, “When you know better, you do better,” and a handy pocket guide listing both villain and superpower ingredients to notice in cosmetic, skincare, and beauty products. I think that this pocket guide would be great to carry around as a reference when shopping for personal care items.

When I lifted up the puff of protective packing shred, I was delighted to see this month’s product mysteriously shrouded in tissue, and decked out in a bright red bow and matching red superhero mask. I thought that it was just adorable and made a clear and lasting impression that some beauty products can be superheroes for our health and beauty, whereas others may not. Tucked in next to my masked superhero product was a faithful “bonus” sidekick.

The brand being highlighted this month is Kahina Giving Beauty. I had become familiar with the brand when researching for A Night for Green Beauty. I had learned that Kahina is a woman-owned company started Katharine L’Heureux after travels to Morocco introduced her to argan oil, a seemingly wondrous skincare ingredient that the Berber women of Morocco have been using for generations to protect their skin against the rough desert conditions. Katharine brought together her years of experience working in public relations for many natural food and beauty brands, along with her philanthropic nature to develop Kahina Giving Beauty. Kahina partnered with the Berber women to establish cooperatives of women to provide high quality argan oil for the beauty line; providing these women with a fair wages and a sustainable source of income. For more on this incredible brand and the story behind their unique packaging, you can see the video above.

Just prior to A Night for Green Beauty I had cashed in Birchbox points that I had been squirreling away and had ordered a number of green beauty products that I wanted to try, including the Kahina facial cleanser. I have been using the cleanser for the last month or so and have been very happy with its efficacy, and its light, natural scent. My skin has been soft and balanced. When Beauty Heroes released its September pick and announced that it would feature a full size Kahina Giving Beauty product with a travel size sidekick, I was sold.

Beauty Heroes September 2015 subscription bo Kahina Giving Beauty Eye Serum

When I unwrapped my Beauty Hero product, I was gazing at a full size bottle of the Kahina Eye Serum (15 ml, value $78.00). As mentioned, Beauty Heroes had already revealed the box contents, so I knew that this was on the way to me, and I was very eager to try it. I have been on the lookout for a nourishing eye product. I tend to have a lot of darkness under my eyes, which I do not love. I also am very sensitive to eye products. Many of them have left me with scaly patches under my eyes that take a long time to correct. I was on the prowl for a gentle and effective eye serum that would be green and healthy for me as well. Facial and eye serums can be quite an investment so I was grateful to have the opportunity to try this eye serum from a trusted green beauty brand for a discounted price. I will add that a little drop of the serum is plenty for the area around both of my eyes so I can see this bottle lasting a very long time. The serum in light and non-greasy. It absorbs quickly and has a very gentle, natural scent. I have only been using it for a couple of days so I cannot comment much about efficacy, but I will say that the skin around my eyes is very soft and I have not had any sign of the serum drying out the super-sensitive skin under my eyes.

Beauty Heroes non-toxic Kahina Giving Beauty facial lotion

The sidekick product tucked in next to our hero was a generous travel size bottle of Kahina’s Facial Lotion (30 ml, stated value $37.00). This lightweight moisturizer also has a natural, gentle scent. It spread over my skin easily and absorbed quickly on its own, and I liked that I could enrich it even more for evening or dry weather by adding a drop or two of a facial oil (as I am prone to doing because I like to gild lilies). Moreover, in addition to being natural, mildly scented, and pleasant to use, both products came in Kahina’s beautiful dark glass bottle with pump dispensers, allowing me to use just the right amount of product and avoid contamination from the outside world (basically, my fingers).

Beauty Heroes September subscription box Kahina Giving Beauty

I am beyond thrilled with my first Beauty Heroes experience. The product quality, packaging, information, and value were all excellent. I must admit that I get a bit nervous with subscription services that send only one main product each month because it can be quite a gamble. I feel far safer betting on Beauty Heroes after seeing the brands that they have chosen to work with in the past and the extent to which they scrutinize products to make sure that they are sending out the true heroes of green beauty. Their list of avoided villain ingredients is the most extensive that I have seen of any green beauty subscription to date. In addition, Beauty Heroes releases the contents of their monthly box at the start of the month, allowing the month-to-month subscribers to skip the month for whatever reason if they wish (see Beauty Heroes FAQs for details). Beauty Heroes also maintains a shop of products from many of the brands that they have featured. All Beauty Heroes members are offered a 15% discount off of shop purchases at any time. In addition, the hero theme is carried out so brilliantly through the product inserts, consumer education, and packaging. I was right in my video prediction. That mask did make its way into the children’s hands. The next time I went into Asher’s room, I spied Bongo giving me the side eye.

Beauty Heroes mask finds a new superhero

I would love to hear your thoughts or experiences with Beauty Heroes. If you want to get your hands on this fantastic Kahina box, do not delay. You must order on or before Tuesday September 15th to receive this box. Remember to use the code HEROLOVE for $10 off of your first box. Orders placed September 16 or later will receive the October box as their first shipment.

If you would like to see my most recent listing of “crunchy-friendly” subscription boxes, you can find that here. It does not have Beauty Heroes on the list, but they will be added to the autumn update very soon. GlobeIn Benefit Basket Subscription Unboxing and Review-August 2015

GlobeIn Benefit Basket August 2015

GlobeIn is a subscription service bringing fairly traded artisan items from around the world. Their Artisan Box subscription packs 4-6 items from a selected theme into one of their signature, handwoven, Mexican baskets for $35.00/month. Their newly introduced Benefit Basket subscription takes one of the items from the monthly Artisan Box and sends it to subscribers in a Mexican basket for $19.99/month (shipping free, and less with multi-month subscriptions). GlobeIn recently ran a promotion offering one month free with a three month Benefit Basket subscription, bringing the cost down to $12.65/basket. I thought it was the perfect opportunity to try out this new service.

I purchased this box and all opinions are my own.

Globein Benefit Basket subscription August 2015

If you would like to see the live-action unboxing please enjoy the video unboxing below. I’m still trying to find the right setting in the new house for unboxing so please bear with the boring backgrounds and poor lighting while I try to figure it all out. If you watch the video you might get to see me juggle (or perhaps not). If you prefer to skip right to the product close-ups and details, scroll down past the video.

I really liked the Globe In box. It has great artwork and I really liked the graphic “clue” about this month’s theme and what was inside. It definitely had a unique personality.

GlobeIn benefit basket review August 2015

One of the reasons that I felt confident giving this subscription a try was because I knew that each month’s box would include one of GlobeIn’s beautiful palm leaf baskets (value $12.00). I really appreciate the reusable packaging and the covered basket is such a versatile size. I can seeing us using it in the kids’ bedrooms or playrooms to hold anything from craft supplies, crayons, toys, shells, rocks, and more. I can also see using these as reusable gift wrap. They would add so much to the presentation of a gift. I thought that the vibrant fuschia basket that I received this month was really beautiful. I also thought that the added touch of the beautiful photograph, name, and brief story about the artisan and group who crafted the basket was very nice; it gave a sense of humanity and individuality to the item rather than being just another mass-produced thing.

GlobeIn benefit basket laundry theme-wool dryer balls

I opened the basket to find a tan, organic cotton interlock, drawstring bag. Inside the bag were three natural wool dryer balls (value $17.50). For those who are not familiar with wool dryer balls, they are designed to replace fabric softener sheets. They offer a natural way to soften and scent clothes in the dryer (just add a few drops of essential oil to the dryer balls). They even cut down on drying time, saving electricity. I have been using dryer balls for a long time, and some of you may have even watched my wool ball tutorial on YouTube (to make decorated balls for child or pet play, or plain balls for the dryer). GlobeIn also included beautiful photographs of the dryer balls as well as the artisan who made them. They also featured a story about the cooperative who makes the dryer balls and a map of where they are located.

GlobeIn Benefit Basket Laundry theme August 2015

In total this month’s GlobeIn basket had a retail value of $29.50, which includes the GlobeIn basket. I think this is a very good value for the price that I paid. I really like what a “feel good” box this is. GlobeIn takes such care to connect its customers to the artisans who product the items for the basket. That intention is really shown through the beautiful inserts, text, and photographs. I also plan to sit down with my children and show them the baskets and the products, and teach them about who made the items. I think that it will go a long way towards making somewhat abstract concepts like world populations, economy, geography, and differences more concrete through actual examples. I am looking forward to receiving my next GlobeIn basket, which is going to feature a Wellness theme.

Barganic Alert: Try the New GlobeIn Benefit Basket Subscription and Get One Month Free

GlobeIn Benefit Basket

In the most recent update of the Crunchy Parent Guide to Crunchy-Friendly Subscription Boxes I highlighted a new offering from the subscription service GlobeIn. GlobeIn has historically offered an “Artisan” Basket subscription which includes 4-6 artisan-made products from around the world (a “globe in a box”) packaged in a Mexican palm leaf basket, as well as a story about the crafters supported by your purchase. The Artisan subscription costs $35/month.

This month, GlobeIn launched their new “Benefit” level subscription. At $19.99/month the Benefit Basket packages one handcrafted item from a remote artisan in a signature Mexican palm leaf basket, along with the story of the crafter.

Through July 30th, GlobeIn is offering a discount to their three month Benefit Basket subscription, making the first basket free. The three month subscription already offers a reduction off of the month-to-month price, but using the link or coupon code BENEFIT will drop the price of a three month subscription to $37.95, or just $12.65 per month for your first three baskets. After receiving your first three baskets, the subscription will re-bill quarterly at the regular rate of $56.95 for three months. Please click the link for all of the details, and to subscribe.

This new subscription looks like a great way to sample the full GlobeIn Artisan experience at a lower price point, and this deal makes it even sweeter. Are you going to give the new Benefit Basket a try?

Make sure that you don’t miss out on any Barganic Alerts, these babies tend to be time-limited. Subscribe to Crunchyparent.com to always be the first to know!

For those looking for subscriptions for organic, eco-friendly, non-toxic, food-allergy friendly, pregnant, new baby, fair trade, indie, and other awesomeness

**I wanted to update my original Crunchy-Friendly Subscription Box List to add new or “new-to-me” boxes that have come into my consciousness since then and to delete those subscriptions that are no longer available. I have bolded all of the listings that are new to this update for ease in finding them.**

As I mentioned briefly in this post I have been making conscious attempts to make self-care a higher priority in the last several years. Parenting can be all-consuming, at least it has been for me many times, and I tended to seriously neglect myself. My cancer diagnosis was a wake up call that I absolutely needed to take better care of myself mentally and physically if I wanted to be able to continue to be a good parent to my children. I also wanted to feel better about myself and how I presented myself to the world. Realistically, I still was not going to have oodles of “me” time, and being able to get away from home to do things alone is even more challenging.

Moreover, skin, haircare, and cosmetic, and body care products simply had to be no- or low-toxin for me to use them. Just in case you’re unfamiliar, subscription services send out a “mystery” package (usually monthly) of products in sample or full sizes for you to try that fit within a certain theme such as eco-freindly beauty and skincare products, or gluten free snacks. I have been receiving subscription boxes for over a year now, and I must say that it has been great!

I personally found it overwhelming at first to select a couple of subscriptions to try. There are countless services available, with many different target markets and missions. There are new services being introduced and old ones phasing out all of the time. I thought that I would try to save you some of the trouble that I went through. I have compiled a fairly comprehensive list of subscription services currently available that may appeal to people of the crunchy mindset, wherever they may be along the crunchy continuum or whichever aspect of crunchiness is important to them. Boxes for children likely feature organic products, high-quality wooden toys, and are battery-free.

I cannot speak to the specifics of any individual subscription, nor am I recommending any of these services over any other. In truth, I have received just a small percentage of these boxes personally, but I wanted to provide a resource. If you have any personal experiences that you wish to share, or if you know of any subscriptions that you think should be added to this list, please mention it in the comments.

Mindfulness Box Subscription Box Unboxing and Review-May 2015

Mindfulness Box is a recently launched subscription service aimed at providing simple reminders and inspiring new, conscientious goods sure to encourage living more deeply in the moment. This lifestyle box includes holistic and homeopathic, essential oil, and mineral based health care products, handcrafted jewelry, delicious biodynamic treats, natural minerals/crystals and more. Each box contains 4-5 items accompanied with guided dialog to enrich the recipient’s journey to balance and inner peace. Boxes cost $29 per month, which includes shipping, and are less with multi-month subscriptions. Currently Mindfulness Box is offering a promotion for 15% off and a free gift with the code MOTHER. Orders must be placed by May 3rd for delivery in time for Mother’s Day. I recently took advantage of the code, which took 15% off my entire multi-month subscription, bringing my individual box price down to $23.23.

In honor of the May box’s Mother’s Day vibe my children joined me for the complete video unboxing shown here. It made me a little less mindful (and thus more prone to minor mistakes, such as repeatedly misidentifying the free gift) but it was livelier and fun, which is part of being a mom too. If you want to skip right to the product close-ups and details, scroll down past the video. To see all of my Mindfulness Box unboxings and reviews, look here.

I should start with my first impression, and that was that the box was packaged with extreme care. Not only was the presentation happy with the smiling Mindfulness Box logo image, but the items were each individually wrapped with a card explaining their use and connecting them to mindfulness and creating calm moments and positive energy as part of a healthy life practice. I will say that I would have preferred the individual baggies being something more Earth-friendly than plastic since there were a lot of them, but the overall care and sentiment were appreciated.

Mindfulness Box Welcome notes

I found that the personal, handwritten note conveyed the care and intention of the individual packaging the box. As I mentioned in the video, I genuinely appreciated seeing my name spelled correctly on the front of the card. That is extremely rare for me and was a level of detail that I noticed. The enclosure card for the overall box reiterated the message encouraging the recipient to carve out moments for personal meditation and reflection, linking the practice to one of the enclosed items.

Mindfulness Box tea and wood

The box included a stick of Palo Santo (approximate value $0.75), which the enclosure card explained is a 100% sustainable and natural wood that grows on the coast of South America. Moreover, this particular stick was wild crafted and sustainably harvested by a family who has planted over 30,000 trees back into their area. The card suggested many ways to use the wood from brewing it as a tea to burning it and using it similarly to a smudge stick to clear areas. I burned a portion of it while working on this post, and Rich was so struck by the unique scent when he entered the room that he closed his eyes and took a deep blissful breath, which alone may have been worth the price of the box. I don’t know the exact source of Mindfulness Box’s Palo Santo, but I based the value on these ones of similar description that I found on Amazon, right before I ordered more.

In addition, as part of my free gift for using the MOTHER code when ordering, the box included two bags of Yogi Tea “Relaxed Mind” (value $0.50).

Mindfulness Box chocolates and crystals

Another part of my free gift, was a precious bar of ZenBunni chocolate in “Lost Salt of Atlantis” (value $2.00). The box also included two additional bars in “Original Topanga” and “Kathmandu Chai” (value $5.00 total). These bars of artisanal chocolates are very tiny (approximately 1 inch by 2 inches) and are clearly meant to be savored and appreciated. The bars are free of gluten, dairy, soy, and refined sugars and are made from certified biodynamic, organic, and wild foraged ingredients. I was familiar with biodynamic farming practices because biodynamic farming and Waldorf education, which my children all attended for some period of time, were both founded by Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner. We had also been members of a biodynamic CSA farm for six years. For those who are unfamiliar with biodynamic growing practices, ZenBunni offers this explanation.

The box also included two small stones, one of which was packaged with my free gift of teas and chocolate (value unknown).

Mindfulness Box EO

Aura Cacia essential oil in Chill Pill (value $10.99) is a blend of sweet orange, lavender, patchouli, peppermint, sweet basil, and Roman chamomile essential oils meant to aid with relaxation. Midnfulness Box also included an enclosure from Aura Cacia with information about how much of the essential oil to use in a number of suggested applications.

Mindfulness Box necklace

This Lael Sunrise Jewelry handmade, faceted, rose quartz necklace is the item that I kept mistakenly referring to as the free gift in the video. It is not the free gift, this lovely item was included in every box and was packaged in a small jewelry box, perfect for gifting. The handcrafted necklace on a 14-karat gold-filled chain is meant to resonate with the heart chakra. I think that it looks delicate and beautiful on, and I have been enjoying wearing it. This item can be purchased directly from Mindfulness Box (value $32.00).

Mindfulness Box cards

Mindfulness Box also included this set of five notecards and envelopes. The notecards feature quotes from Zen Buddhist poet Thich Nhat Hanh (value $12.00). I look forward to using them as gift enclosures, “just because” notes for friends, or as an extension of journaling as suggested by Mindfulness Box. These cards are seemingly another Mindfulness Box exclusive.

Mindfulness Box complete

Overall, I was very pleased with my first Mindfulness Box. At first glance, I wasn’t sure how the value would stack up against the purchase price, but my best estimates would place the value of the box at around $60.74, which does not include my free gift with purchase or the small stone whose value I could not estimate. My absolute favorite discovery in the box is the Palo Santo stick, despite being a low value item in terms of cost. Moreover, I am incredibly impressed with the quality and craftsmanship of the items included in the box, and the overall curation. I think that Mindfulness Box remains very true to their stated mission and demographic, and will be especially appreciated by a like-minded consumer. I am excited to receive my next box to see how this subscription continues to evolve.

Crunchy-friendly Subscription Boxes

IMG_7225 - Version 2

As I mentioned briefly in ‎this post I have been making conscious attempts to make self-care a higher priority in the last several years.

Just in case you’re unfamiliar, subscription services send out a “mystery” package (usually monthly) of products in sample or full sizes for you to try that fit within a certain theme such as eco-freindly beauty and skincare products or gluten free snacks. I figured that by joining a service, I would get a special package (or more) each month just for me with products to encourage me to pamper myself. It would also help me discover new natural, organic, or otherwise eco-friendly products that had already been screened and curated by companies with values like my own. Once I got my boxes, I could have some R&R time with a new face mask after the kids went to bed at night, or if I had an occasion when I might want to wear lipstick, I might actually own one. I have been receiving subscription boxes for about a year now, and I must say that it has been great!

Boxes for children likely feature organic products, high-quality wooden toys, and are battery-free.
